The north of Burgenland

The north of Burgenland is greatly influenced by Lake Neusiedl - a unique steppe lake - and offers a completely diverse range of wines. A large number of vineyards are located around Lake Neusiedl.

The rolling hills of the Parndorf Plain yield richly textured white wines as well as full-bodied reds. Blauer Zweigelt is the dominating variety, and blended wines with a complex character represent the impressive red wines derived from vines flourishing in stony sand and clay soils.
The red wine spectrum is rounded off by Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent, Pinot Noir and Merlot. Vineyards around Neusiedl, Gols, Mönchhof, Halbturn and Frauenkirchen yield an unrivalled diversity of top-quality white and red wines. The village of Andau, where a sappy, ripe style of Zweigelt is produced, also holds great potential. Committed young winemakers and impressively designed wineries underline the high quality commitment.

Both white wines and red wines offer fruit elements with inviting depth. In the Seewinkel area, which forms a triangle between Podersdorf, Illmitz and Apetlon, the microclimate and sandy soils are favourable for the production of sweet wines. The proximity to Lake Neusiedl and the many small saline lakes (Zickseen) here are ideal for the production of naturally sweet Prädikat wines. Most of the vineyards lie in the heart of the Lake Neusiedl National Park. As a unique World Heritage Site, Lake Neusiedl represents the ideal combination of enjoyment, harmony and a positive and healthy attitude to life.

Neusiedlersee DAC, which came onto the market in March 2012, stands for fruity and harmonious red wines made from Zweigelt. The wines must reflect local climate and soil. The wines are also available with the additional designation of “Reserve” either as a pure Zweigelt or as a Zweigelt-dominated blend.

Every part of this area bears witness to a long tradition of winegrowing. Along the slopes of the Leithagebirge Mountains, where Purbach, Donnerskirchen, St. Margarethen, Rust, Schützen, Eisenstadt, Kleinhöflein, St. Georgen and Großhöflein are situated, the Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Welschriesling grape varieties yield white wines with a mineral character.

Most of the top red wine vineyard sites are planted with Blaufränkisch, and yield wines that reveal a sensational balance of fruit. The area around Pöttelsdorf (Rosalia) is especially known for its outstanding Blaufränkisch wines. Rust is particularly important: this village, with its wonderful old baroque houses, is home to the Austrian Wine Academy and is famous for its Ruster Ausbruch, an exquisite naturally sweet wine.

The winemakers along the Leithagebirge (Leitha mountain range) and west of Lake Neusiedl have also agreed on a regionally typical wine style. The foundation for Leithaberg DAC wines are the geological conditions around the Leithagebirge: shell lime, slate and high loam content at the foot of the hills give the wines a distinctive taste. These wines are more elegant than powerful and captivate with their fineness, minerality and juicy fruit. This is the only DAC region that offers a regionally typical white wine as well as a regionally typical red wine – both wines have a remarkable ageing potential and are characterised by limestone and slate.
